Leading online travel retailer On the Beach witnessed record sales this payday weekend, up a staggering 28% on the previous weekend with sun-starved Brits booking beach holidays in their droves.

tr7.jpgAs the weather in Britain continues to disappoint, with more rain due to hit our shores throughout August, record numbers of Britons booked a holiday this payday weekend. Sun drenched Turkey was the most popular destination, currently enjoying temperatures in the mid 30’s.

As the nations salaries hit the bank accounts, Brit’s were busy searching for holiday bargains with such destinations as Mallorca (currently experiencing temperatures of 28o), Egypt, (38o), Costa Brava (30o) and the Canary islands (26o) also proving particularly popular.

In the North East and North West, Turkey was the favoured destination with 36% of bookings made whilst in the Midlands, mainland Spain and the Canary Islands hit the top spots with 42% of bookings.

London and the South East favoured Egypt, Turkey and the Canaries, making up 55% of all bookings

In Scotland, Spain and Turkey once again proved as popular as ever with 41% and 22% respectively.

Simon Cooper, Chief Executive Officer of On the Beach said, “It’s been a fantastic weekend for bookings here at On the Beach, with many consumers waiting for their July payday before booking their summer holiday. Whilst the credit crunch is impacting millions of consumers across the country and spending on the high street hits a record low, many of our customers are not willing to give up their hard earned holidays but are of course looking for real value-for-money.”
